ST: Kukla

Page history last edited by Richard Hughes 15 years, 8 months ago

Kukla, whose thrashing shakes the world. Resident fluffy ST.

General information

Kukla is a roleplay-oriented ST - this isn't so much because he's opposed to a good, crunchy ruleset so much as he thinks that Exalted's ruleset is a bad, crunchy ruletset. He has unofficial dominion over setting metaphysics, themes, and plot, but generally defers to other ST's on matter of rules and design.

How Kukla perceives the themes of Exalted

Exalted, to me, is a game of Fantasy Realpolitik. The mighty hero strides forth, but the powers that be are driven as much by grim realities about the limitations of their power and influence and their own self-interest as by any heroic or villainous impulses. No one is a cariacature who exists to fulfill a plot role - everyone has an agenda. Everyone has desires. Everyone has flaws.

Kukla's favorite plot types

  • Raksha-based plots. Oh, I love these psychotic ego-drones of chaos blossoming out of the foamy chaos at the edge of the world. There's never a bad time for raksha. They can be all sorts of strange and weird and dangerous and beautiful, and any plot that involves making deals with them, throwing their madness out of creation, or coping with their monstrous predations is great fun for me because I get to write the most baroque language and descriptions.
  • Plots about the Guild and other Bad People. Mortals, money, corruption, and the filthy black side of Creation that everyone glosses over with a shiny anime veneer. Creation is high bronze age technology for the most part, and people are xenophobic as hell, casually abusing those who are Other because they don't really count as people. Plots and scenes that remind everyone that the world is in an Age of Sorrows, and what that means, are a delight to run.
  • Plots that are easy to run!  If all I have to do is set up a scenario between multiple players characters and let you guys play out an encounter, I will eagerly and happily do so.

What to know if you want your custom material approved

Do:

  • Create material that doesn't conflict with existing thematics and metaphysics. Not all Exalts can do the same thing, and even those that can don't do it in the same way.

Don't:

  • Create rules material that is more powerful than existing rules material at the same level. Violet Bier of Sorrows is not a reasonable basis for comparison.

What to know if you want your player-run plot to be a success in my eyes

Do:

  • Build your plot off of ongoing activities, or create a change for ongoing activities around the plot.
  • Give the players in the plot a chance to change the world in a meaningful fashion but at a managable scale.

Don't:

  • Kill everybody.
  • Create an upheaval to the plot that requires more than twenty minutes of hard work on my part to resolve in to a coherent narrative
  • Include a Deus Ex Machina that renders previous player character struggle irrelevant.

Wiki Repair To-Do List

Repairing the wiki is my job. If you see something broken (and after Sura nuked the old wiki, there's a lot) toss me a line and tell me to fix it.

  • Rebuild the Recent History to add a Not-So-Recent History section.

Kukla's Korner

Where I muse about what a perfect world would be like, depressing myself. Kukla's Korner
