Nexus: Five Bridges

Page history last edited by Mycol 15 years, 9 months ago

Formerly known as Cinnabar, this district has a new name now: Five Bridge District. The name comes from the massive structure of five intersecting bridges made of sturdy basalt, and at the foot of each one an obsidian threshhold with an Astrological Sign writ large into it. The signs are The Crow, The Haywain, The Rising Smoke, The Sword, and The Corpse. At the center stands a diaphanous wirework of a reaper daiklave in glittering starmetal, particularly resplendent under the starlight. Nobody knows from whence the structure came from, its appearance coinciding with the end of the breach in reality and a great display of purple starlight. Underneath, the citizens of Nexus are rebuilding, exploring new ventures with mining companies and stakes being claimed.

The people of Nexus view Five Bridges with caution and a healthy dose of fear.  Its origins shroud it in much mystery, as it was once a hole in Creation to parts unknown.  Equally mysterious to the denizens of Nexus is how the Five Bridges came into existance.  The more superstitious blame much of what happened on Anathema, and refuse to cross the district boundary.  The destitute and money-hungry dismiss these notions, but do acknowledge the strangeness of the district, and often carry various wards on their persons.  Cannier still are the ward and charm vendors on the outskirts of the district, and the thaumaturges employed by the wealthy mining concerns to produce protection for their employees.

Rumors/Plothooks

  • It is rumored that a maiden with glit purple robes and a mask wanders the district on nights when the signs of Saturn are ascending.  On these nights, the astrological signs at the base of the bridges are known to glow a ghastly shade of purple.
  • Miners talk of strange ghostly lights in the depths below the district, and most have small pendants of the strange obsidian found in the mines, believing that they ward off ghosts.
  • There are miners that have simply gone missing in the tunnels below, and nobody knows where they went.
  • People passing through the district sometimes report hearing the chittering of giant metal spiders.
  • A few savants that have examined the bridges believe that there is another maiden behind the creation of the bridges (not knowing that they are in fact right and wrong).

Events

  • Sealing the Void:  Silver Knight repairs the hole in the Tapestry where Cinnabar District was using a ritual dedicated to Saturn, resulting in the sudden appearance of the Five Bridges and the Monument of the Sword.
