Log: Braving Spidermist

Page history last edited by Richard Hughes 15 years, 3 months ago

Solar mercenary Zyrius Kalius travels to Spidermist to spy and kill on behalf of his current boss, emperor Darius. (Scene run by Lark, 3xp)

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Okay. So you want to go to Spidermist from Fort Livenworth, right?"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "that seems to be the plan"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Raikou army has retreated back to the Fiefdom of Roses. But there is a road directly from Fort Livenworth to Spidermist."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "Delightful."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Do you follow the road?"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "Indirectly, as one follows a river along the treeline."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "Also, my raven flies overhead to play as scout, and immediately swoops down to report to me if anything seems odd."

The road to Spidermist is safe a few miles south of Fort Livenworth, but becomes dangerous soon, as refugees fleeing the Vir Sidus troops and vengeful slaves make wonderful targets for the angry slave gangs (little more than bandits) and penniless mercenaries (more like professional bandits). For miles it is doted of corpses, some of them viciously slaughtered, broken wagons, etc. And yet, there is a steady traffic of people going southwards. Plantation owners fearing to become dispossessed, with what guards they can still pay. Survivors of mercenary groups. Former merchants. They have learned to travel in groups, and still they often get attacked, particularly at night. But the road is the only option, as the forests grow denser, wilder, at both sides of the road. And it is a fine road, too, paved, broad, the rain barely hinders travel. The Guild knows how to build important trade routes.

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "I haven't had a scene here in eons, do you want me to pose my actions at this point? :-)"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Up to you."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "we'll just roll with this for now then, slinking along the roads edges, I am at one in the wild and my men are properly trained, the woods are little challenge."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Wait, you travel with your army?"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "They know the way, it's like a horde of volkswagen beetles trying to keep up with a porche through the wilderness, they'll catch up when we get there, but they are essentially running on their own while I scout waaaaay ahead."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "How many men?"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "a scale"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "That is... 25?"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "If memory serves me, yes"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "Darius' cronies ;-)"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "My Expendable Distraction, in Zyrius' eyes."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Yes, they are going to get expended fast."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "Haha, that bad eh? If a serious threat really looms I would likely send them off in small groups to take up proper positions, as they are all snipers like myself."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "There are gangs of slaves and bandits out there larger than a scale."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "well well. Seems like the only logical thing to do would be to send them trekking through the forest for a safe rendevous point rather than have them follow me."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "What safe rendezvous point?"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "Somewhere far away from these bandito bastards. We'd basically diverge on a 90 degree angle, I go forward, they go west of me to avoid the crowds and find a safe spot to hide out. If things get hairy, I can send my raven to fetch them or vice versa, he's a smarty birdy."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "makes things easier for me if I send them away anyway. I'll just Soaring Crane Leap my arse the rest of the way to make things snappy."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "I still want a Int + Survival or Dex + Stealth roll to avoid being seen while you travel parallel to the road."

(Judge) Zyrius Kalius rolls Dexterity + Stealth: [ 3 3 3 4 4 4 8 9 <10> <10> ]

        Resulting in 6 successes.

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Good enough. I will pose something interesting that happens halfway to Spidermist, then :)"

Halfway to Spidermist, and still some miles from the place where the map says is the frontier, there is a blockade in the road. A palisade with two low towers rises blocking the path, the gates opened, but armed men stop all the people coming and question them.

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "how many men"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "You don't know yet, there could be many behind the palisade."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "Checkpoint? What Checkpoint? Soaring Crane Leap from the woods, unless they are stargazing they won't notice a small man soaring over their heads I'd wager."

The palisade extends a hundred years at the sides of the road, and behind there is a large camp. Dozens of wooden cabins and tents. Apparently the travellers are retained for a while before being left to go on. You can see many soldiers in green and brown, forest colors, armed with bows, spears and swords. Perhaps a hundred or two.

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "alright, invoking Easily Overlooked Presence Method..."

Zyrius Kalius makes his way from the woods and eyeballs the guards calmly as his raven soars far overhead, scoping out the scenery from above. The cloaked man takes a deep breath and harnesses his anima in a manner to cloak his very sight from the minds of others in hopes that he manages to sneak past without being noticed.

The guards stop everyone crossing the gates, but somehow Zyrius is missed. He can hear them, though, separating mercenaries from merchants and slaves. They are not nice once the gate is left behind. It seems the mercenaries are conscripted, and most of the rest of the travellers puts in chains and sent southwards, their possessions taken.

(Judge) Zyrius Kalius rolls Perception + Awareness: [ 2 3 3 4 4 5 6 6 8 ]

        Resulting in 1 successes.

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius winces.

Zyrius Kalius seems rather heartless about the whole situation, he doesn't even bat an eye at the chained helpless fools nor their stolen possessions, he simply concentrates on passing the checkpoint silently and in one piece. Any valiant hero would fight these pathetic bandits and rescue these men...but Zyrius is anything but valiant, and even less a hero, and it shows by the harsh blue glare of his piercing eyes as he watches on.

Half a mile down road there are no more soldiers, the road is clear and well-kept. He is now in Spidermist territory, and the civil strife of Livenworth is past. Some miles afterwards he starts to see plantations and fields at the sides of the road, the slaves working despite the cold rain. Apparently there have been no rebellions here.

Zyrius Kalius moves along quietly, not speaking to a soul as his raven continues to scout overhead for his master's targets. The peculiar man slowly makes his way back towards the tree line while he occasionally looks up, expecting Obsidian to find the marks and flutter down to alert him of a location.

It is the third day of walking when Zyrius finally sees Spidermist. A small town with an impressive stone wall, build on a hill. The Guild obviously expected trouble here to build such a well-fortified outpost. The forests a mile or three around the city have been cleaned, turned into fields for cultivation, but beyond the forest looms tall and dark. Just like the town. Only one gate, facing the road, a drawbridge over a pit eight yards across. Tall towers with ballistae.

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "*yawn* bloody hell, mas and darius forgot to mention this place was impossible"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Impossible?"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "I forgot to mention the drawbridge is down, the gate open :)"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "lol. yeah that's a nice tidbit to mention."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "People gets stopped at the gate, though, there is a line to enter."

Zyrius Kalius peers about, still periodically watching the raven overhead for a queue, his weapons are well hidden beneath his robes as he approaches the gates in a casual fashion.

Nobody seems to be rejected at the doors, although the guards ask for names and a reason to visit. They also confiscate weapons. Most of the people at the gate seem peasants or merchants that bring their wares to the city. A couple times, while Zyrius waits, a mounted soldier comes and is quickly admitted in the town.

Zyrius Kalius continues on, being just as sneaky as before as he glides past the men and women waiting in the queue, hoping to make it past this set of guards as well.

It works, careful as they are, the guards can’t see a man hidden by solar magic. Zyrius is inside the city, a city of narrow alleys and tall wooden houses. People come and go, looking grim and serious, there is a good number of soldiers in the streets, too.

Zyrius Kalius marches along, still watching his bird overhead while his weapons are expertly concealed. The marks must be around here somewhere...

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Hmm, who are you looking for?"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Hmm, who are you looking for?"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "lol hell if I know :-D they were never specific, just said officers, tacticians in the battle"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "That is a bit vague. Well, there are army barracks, more like a small fortress in the south side of the town."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "You're tellin' me, love. Darius claimed Mas would have a "List of targets" for me. You saw what he told me...:-/"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "I think they were expecting like...battle formations that I can pick officers off of the outskirts thereof."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "I suspect they hadn't given it as much thought as they should have lol."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Unfortunately they have no spies here, so they don't know who are the leaders (beyond what there is in the wiki)"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "So you know the Guild governor is a DB called Amber Scorpion (a wood aspect) and he proclaimed himself king."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "There is some mysterious sorceress that calls demons for him, too."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "And that is about it."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Anyway, what do you want to do? Your orders are killing enemy commanders, but you don't know names or places."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "I can see pretty well atm, and that figures. This is becoming tiresome :-/"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "You need to do some recon and investigation, I guess."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Maybe bribing, if you have cash."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "meh."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "I guess recon/investigationy type stuff"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Okay, what do you do and what is your goal?"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "sneak around looking for soldiers who salute certain people, people who wear defining ranks, goal is to find the enemy commanders I guess"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Okay, roll Perception + investigation"

(Judge) Zyrius Kalius rolls Perception + Investigation: [ -1- 2 3 5 7 8 9 ]

        Resulting in 3 successes.

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Where are you staying while in the city, by the way?"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "lurking in alleyways and such?"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "And where do you sleep?"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "wherever I can find a quiet spot, alleys, rooftops..."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Good thing exalted cannot catch colds :)"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "Quite."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "lived in the woods for over a decade, still lives in a tree, he's pretty well used to the elements anyway ;-)"

A few days of miserable living, eating stale army rations and spying the barracks of the Spidermist mercenaries have given Zyrius a fair idea of how the defenders of the city are organized. Amber Scorpion visits the barracks often, to meet with officers and scouts, he is an imposing dark-skinned southern man, a few inches over six feet, who carries a daiklave strapped to his back. Soldiers come and go constantly, the area near the city is well patrolled. Patrols of 25 men, led by a lieutenant, there are at least four of those out there all the time. They are on foot, although Zyrius learns they have enough horses for at least one hundred men, and they use them when they need speed. Over the lieutenants, it is possible identify several captains. Those seem the highest officers under Scorpion. They have different areas of responsibility, though, so the number of troops they command is variable. The troops, which are technically mercenaries, seem much better trained than the rabble in Fort Livenworth, although they wear only light armor.

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "so tempted to aim for scorpion, but I know I'd get raped"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "I guess I just aim for the commanders, and any tacticians I can identify and what not."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Okay."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "You have identified 3 of Scorpion's captains."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "hmm. mortals?"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Maybe. One is a grizzled veteran, in charge of organizing the patrols.

Another is a younger woman, she is in charge of guarding the gates.

The third is a green-haired young man, he seems to be preparing something. He leaves often, returning a few days later with new troops, apparently mercenaries fleeing Livenworth."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "ok just making sure :-) How armored is the veteran then?"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "The officers wear reinforced breastplates. The soldiers wear chainshirts under green and brown clothes."

As Zyrius lurks from the shadows, watching the movements of the soldiers, a large black bird swoops down from above, nimbly landing upon it's master's shoulder and beating it's wings in anxious energy, "Boss!" the bird squawks in a hushed tone, "The armored one! He is controlling the soldiers!" A dark chuckle escapes the lips of the hooded man as he grins to the bird, "Excellent work, Obsidian. I'll buy you a drink when we get home." As the bird dances about he adds, "MmmMmMmMmMmmmm Wine!" before launching away once more, leaving his master room to work. Zyrius glances about, looking for a route to high ground, and the alley he is in provides it quite nicely. The swift lad backs against the wall, sizing the one before him up calmly before heaving himself forward in a charge, leaping high and planting his feet against the brick latticework. As his boots grip, he pushes off, repeating the move against the opposing wall. With no time for delay, another heave sends him towards the second wall once more before a harsh grunt precedes a massive leap, hurling his frame through a nimble backflip and finally planting his feet for one last jump, pushing him across to the opposite roof with blazing speed. The moment his boots touch surface his robe gives birth to a shimmering Orichalcum Powerbow. Zyrius squints his blue eyes harshly as they lock onto his target while his hand slowly glides back to his quiver....then without warning his dim anima begins to glow, revealing the mark of the Night Caste as his arm moves with blinding haste, ripping off five shots before a lesser man could rest a single arrow upon a string.

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "You are manifesting you anima? That is going to make hiding later pretty hard :)"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "it happens automatically with an obvious charm, no?"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit rereads, "no, obvious charms do not cause your anima to flare. It is just it is obvious you are using a charm."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "oh well hell, strike the anima then"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "okay, then you get 2 extra dice for the stunt. And since your powerbow has accuracy +3, you get to roll dex + archery + 5"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "5 times."

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "*prays to the dice gods*"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "poor guy :)"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "lol me or him?"

ooc Target arrows reduce his armor to 3L. His DV is 4, and gets -1 for each arrow after the first. So you hit with 9, 1, 3, 7 and 15 succeses.

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "Pincushion."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Damage is Str + 3 + successes. Or 15, 7, 9, 13, 21. -3 each for armor. Total is 55L! Roll to see how much a pincushion he is left :)"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit notes for the next time, you could have tried a surprise attack, so his DV would have been 0. Also, with a roll like that you might have killed Amber Scorpion :)

(Judge) Zyrius Kalius rolls Strength + 9: [ -1- 2 3 3 4 4 4 5 6 8 8 8 9 ]

        Resulting in 10 successes.

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "So, he is dead by 23 health levels. Very dead :)"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "hmm, if I have time I'm gonna aim for another officer then after this, before retreat"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "There are no other officers around, but if you want to kill some extras you can. Let me pose first :)"

The old officer dies with the third arrow Zyrius shots, the other two a bit of an overkill. He falls to the ground in the front of the platoon he was reviewing, the soldiers standing in horrified silence for a second or two before crying for help, shouting ‘assassin!’ and looking around to spot Zyrius, that stands in a roof quite visibly. Several of the guards run towards the building, while a few others carry the mangled body of their commander away. Soon whistles and bells begin sounding, as the whole city stands in alert.

Zyrius Kalius tucks his bow away and turns away from his target before charging towards the edge of the roof. Just as his last food reaches the overhang, Zyrius launches himself skyward, soaring a distance that is rediculously far for any mortal to achieve, he's obviously making his way towards the tree line!

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "Soaring Crane Leap."

The guards shout in impotent rage as Zyrius jumps from a building to another to fast for them to follow. A few try to shot arrows, but with little luck. However, not all the guards of the city are mortal. And suddenly a monstrous insect-like creature materializes in front of Zyrius. Large as horse, six legs of crystal sprout from its torso and powerful wings sprout from its back. Its voice is a song of brass and glass, speaking the language of the Old Realm. “Assassin, surrender now or die.”

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "WTF Dude."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "What do you do?"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "Since I'm screwed at this point either way, burning 10 essence, 5 shots of Trance of Unhesitating Speed with exploding arrows."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "We are going to have to roll Join Battle to see who goes first."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "This is Wits + awareness"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "Meh. *prepares to die*"

(Judge) Zyrius Kalius rolls Wits + Awareness: [ -1- 4 4 5 7 9 9 <10> <10> ]

        Resulting in 7 successes.

(Judge) Blithe Lark Spirit rolls 3: [ 2 8 8 ]

        Resulting in 2 successes.

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "You go first, in tick 0, then it goes in tick 5."

Zyrius Kalius is in midleap when the creature appears, forcing Zyrius to quite literally crash into it. The young lad does so with surprising grace however as he plants his feet upon the creatures chest and leaps backwards, twirling his body in a beautiful acrobatic spin as he unsheaths his bow once again. Through some measure of luck or through sheer skill alone, the man lands in a perfect firing stance, bow aimed, eyes locked, arrow touched. This creature was not going to stand in his way if he could help it. In another blur of motion, Zyrius snaps off five arrows towards their target...but these are not normal arrows at all. The heads are formed from glass vials that are filled with a peculiar green liquid...the surprise was yet to come...

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "2 extra dice!"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "so +5 yeah?"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "By the way, when you stunt you also recover mana. 2 mana for each extra dice."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Yes, +5 in each arrow."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "18 health levels. Congratulations, you just blew up your first demon :)"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "thank goodness"

The creature expresses its surprise at being land-kicked with a nice chime-like sound, but its song ends among a rain of explosive alchemical arrows that blow up its crystal and chitin carapace in a million of gleaming shards. The beast shattered body falls down to the street below, causing some panic among the citizens. The path to escape is clear again. Run, Zyrius, run!

Zyrius Kalius sheaths his bow once again and makes no delay in bounding on to the next roof, little seems to surprise this man anymore. His boots barely grace the arch of the rooftops between bounds, once again making his way towards the treeline in a considerably more hastened manner than before. Overhead, Sid squawks and flaps to keep up, "Hahahahaha! Monster Bastard! Master killed you good!"

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "Alright, you are out, although they will try to chase you with demons and hunting dogs :)"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "I wanted to kill a few more officers really :)"

-= OOC =- Zyrius Kalius says, "wanted to cause disarray, hopefully whoever I killed was important."

-= OOC =- Blithe Lark Spirit says, "He was the senior captain, in charge of a lot of bureucracy stuff, as well as training the troops."
