Cathak Clock Tower

Cathak Clock Tower

The tallest structure in Greyfalls hands down, the Cathak Clock Tower can be seen in every corner of the city, overshadowed only by the Empress's palace which stands taller.  The masive tower is made of ironwood to prevent it from falling easily.  Inside the tower, a massive mechanism of clockwork powered by steam runs a gigantic clock.  Near the top of the tower on each of the four faces are large, round alabaster clock dials run by this mechanism.  The very top of the tower serves as an outpost for the emergency signal sentries as men are on the look out at all times to spot the huge conflagrations of the emergency stations scattered throughout the satrapy.  The clock tower plays yet another role in the city as every hour that passes causes giant bells inside it to be rung.  Merchants use the tower's chimes to better regulate when to open and close shop.

The Cathak Clock Tower is a new addition to the satrapy.  Within the city itself it aids the merchants to open and close shops with the giant dials and chimes which announce the time.  In addition, the tower itself is made of ironwood, making it resilient to attacks and thus serving as an artillery platform for the legion (usually fielding mundane ballistae and onagers).  However, the clock tower has a much more important purpose for the satrapy as a whole.  Since it serves as an outpost for the emergency signals, it allows the legion to reinforce outposts in the satrapy that are in trouble more effectively--usually by deploying fast troops such as cavalry or marine units on airboats.  The capability of reacting rapidly and effectively allows the garrison to keep most of the troops in a centralized location with only minimal outposts spread thinly throughout the satrapy.

The sentry system itself involves many outposts stationed on high points throughout the satrapy.  These double as troop outposts for the central garrison.  If an outpost has an emergency they set off a conflagration which the outpost nearest to Greyfalls can see.  In turn these outposts set off their conflagration until it reaches the clock tower which alerts the Imperial garrison and from there troops are deployed to the area affected.  Since it may take a while to reinforce a particular outpost, nearby outposts also deploy troops to their neighbours in need until the official backup arrives.  It is an experimental system, of course, but Strategos Zuriel has high hopes for it as it means the legion isn't spread out too much.
